The New Portage Guide materials satisfy the assessment and planning needs of home visiting programs and center based programs such as Head Start, Early Head Start, childcare, preschool, early childhood special education, and inclusion classrooms. Programs serving children from birth to six years will benefit from using this consistent assessment tool and planning process throughout the child’s enrollment in the program.

The New Portage Guide: Birth to Six materials are designed to support caregivers/teachers in thinking reflectively, ecologically and in terms of their relationship and interactions with children and families. These materials are appropriate for caregivers/teachers at many stages of teaching experience. The observational assessment process may be new for some and may confirm patterns of development familiar for others.

The activity/interaction cards offer ideas and strategies for supporting development through a reflective planning and individualizing process. Many caregivers/teachers will have additional ideas and strategies to support development and learning. The assessment process provides a framework for thinking about the child’s development; and the activity/interaction cards, offer creative ideas that can be expanded and individualized, based on the setting and the preferred style of the caregiver/teacher.

The Portage Project offers a web-based version of the New Portage Guide: Birth to Six – eTOP (electronic Tool for Observation and Planning) which is designed to incorporate the entry of initial and on-going observations allowing the teacher/home visitor to track and document each child’s progress over time.

On-demand reports provide information about the child’s development and assist in planning appropriate strategies. Reports may be generated for each Individual Child or aggregated for Classroom/Caseload, Site or Agency reporting.
